Reata Returns
Reata Restaurant’s new location at 530 Throckmorton Street is a fitting temporary home for the iconic restaurant known for launching the careers of several notable chefs. On a recent visit, I grabbed a seat at the horseshoe bar and ordered an espresso martini.
The tall, frothy pour of vodka, Kahlua, cold brew, and dark cacao liqueur placed the libation on the sweeter side of the java ’tini spectrum. The boozy and medium-bodied martini left a lovely lingering sweetness.
The Lavender Liz (Empress 1908 Gin, lavender bitters, simple syrup, fresh lemon juice) was light, citrusy, and floral. The fresh lemon juice complemented the gin famed for its distinctive blend of botanicals and striking color. As I finished off the second cocktail that reminded me of a gin daiquiri, the main course arrived.
A stunning and perfectly cooked six-ounce sirloin came with a light gravy glaze.
A stunning and perfectly cooked six-ounce sirloin came with a light gravy glaze, side of buttery, garlic-kissed mashed potatoes, and three plump butterfly shrimp. The lightly salted and peppered beef — soft and richly flavored throughout — was topped with a lovely wine-glazed sauce. The crusted shrimp came topped with a sweet bourbon glaze. The buttery mashed spuds lent a creamy, comforting contrast to rich meat and seafood.
Monday is the official opening of Reata’s new location. Downtown will soon have another destination for superlative cocktails: Le Méridien Fort Worth Downtown. The hotel featuring Texas bravado and European flair boasts a rooftop bar (ANNEX) that serves creative cocktails, mouth-watering food, and panoramic views. Sounds like another staycation-worthy lobby bar.
