Get Baked
Following the advice of a member of my favorite Facebook group, I stopped by The Black Rooster Bakery to check out one of Baked Pizzeria’s bi-weekly pop-up events. The scratch-style kitchen began hosting pop-up events a few months ago with a focus on traditional and creative pies plus baked desserts. With my daughter in tow, I ordered Saturday’s special, the Gyro Pizza, and a hot slice of apple pie. We stepped into a nearby toy store while they baked our order.
Opening the box, I was struck by the lovely aroma of Tzatziki. Each bite was dense and flavorful, bursting with salty bits of feta cheese, creamy sauce, small cubes of crisp cucumber, and chunks of savory lamb. The chewy and lightly charred crust had the heft to hold the heavy toppings together. The combined flavors delivered the rich flavors of the famous Greek gyro. Two slices left me full and ready for the apple pie pizza, which is sold by the slice.
The delightful dessert came on the same style of thick and chewy crust, this time topped with a rich cinnamon-killed filling, chopped bits of tangy apples, and generous drizzles of icing. The overall experience was rich, comforting, and filling.
It’s great to see pop-up pizza events enriching our culinary scene. Panther City’s pizza cognoscenti still remember the late-night pop-ups held by Black Cat Pizza’s Chef Jaime Fernandez several years ago. The crew behind Baked Pizzeria clearly enjoys what they’re doing, and it shows in their baked goods. You’ve been warned. You have two weeks to plan your visit to this must-try pop-up event.
