Summer Reflections
By Liz Walden
With the recent change in weather, I like most am wondering how soon fall weather will return. From flip-flops to baseball hats — what are most people wearing now? As a mid-30-something with a slight career change, I’ve had the need to upgrade my wardrobe. With most of my focus over the last decade revolving around child-rearing and climbing the career ladder, my clothing collection has seen more neglect than I’d like to admit, and professional attire wasn’t the only thing lacking.
Until a couple of years ago, I lived in a small town, and let’s just say, I was not wearing the latest and greatest. Totally fine. And a great save on the wallet, but it was time. Now, as I enter places of business in greater Fort Worth, on occasion, I’m asked where an item I’m wearing can be found — something that was not occurring when living in the country. Disclaimer: I’m not a fashion guru, more so a recent trier and purchaser of new summer attire. Here’s what I’ve come to learn and love, from personal-opinion basic tips to trusted brands.
First, let’s talk about self-care, personal hygiene, and the simple, small things. A good haircut, skincare routine, and some clean or polished nails can make anyone feel and look their best. A well-rested face and some confidence go a long way in the looks department, and provide a boost of energy for you and those around you! When trying to look your best, the details do matter. Most know how to match your shoes to your belt (brown with brown, etc.), but going beyond that and matching your watch to your shoes (or a necklace to the tone in your buttons or belt buckle) can add a detail that really does impact your appearance.
If money in the bank is lacking but you need to freshen up your wardrobe, I’d suggest pouring what you have into yourself (and maybe one staple item like a blazer, if you’re able). Speaking of blazers … layering up and combating Texas weather with stylish and adorably practical options is always recommended. Granted, there may not be much variation outside right now, but I’ve been into many offices and restrooms that have felt cold enough to be meat lockers. So, a sweater, jacket, or button-up on hand is always a must for me.
I’ve always wanted to have a fabric color test done to see what tones go best with my skin. But, since that isn’t practical at the moment, I’ve recently become a huge fan of neutrals. I know what some are thinking: boring. Perhaps. Nonetheless, I’ve found they’re easier to mix and match (again saving some money in the bank), and, for the most part, I find they look more professional. I’m not talking black slacks and a white top, though by all means, please pull that off! I mean: jeans and a white T-shirt with a fresh pair of white sneakers; for the ladies, brown high-waisted shorts and a fitted tan tank top; for the men, khaki shorts and a black or navy polo. Beyond incorporating some new and neutral stable pieces, I do like to add in some items of personal taste and flare with a pop of color. Some articles just speak to the soul and you hear that inner voice say, ‘Yes!’ When you know something bold is for you, you know. And again, that confidence goes a long way.
Now, I know some white sneakers were mentioned. We need to hone in on the shoes. Here in the city, shoes are more important than I’d like them to be. Unless you’re someone who has made it big and has a reputation that speaks for itself outside of clothing and appearance, what you wear on your feet really does matter. Crocks? They’re a no. Sorry. Wear plastic and solely rubber shoes to the pool, not dinner. Again, a few neutral staple pieces go a long way! A pair of brown or black sandals:
Men: I don’t know what to tell you here … the jury is out. Thong sandals? Maybe if they’re leather. I’m personally a Birkenstock fan, but I’m an East Coast girl, and most of us are still wearing them with socks when cold, so I’m really not one to talk here. I’m honestly not sure if guys should be wearing sandals at all anymore. For me, they’re up there with jorts. Why can we wear them and not you? Great question.
Wedge heels for the ladies (comfort plus cute!), and of course, a good fresh pair of, yes, white sneakers. Everyone seems to have their go-to favorite brand for sneakers: Nike, Reebok, New Balance - you name it, but for wedges and sandals, the best comfort and most complemented summer footwear I have are Toms - highly recommend. And for both men and women, I love a good pair of boots. I’m a personal fan of Ariat, but I’m sure we all have our favorites here.
No summer fashion discussion is complete without addressing skin exposure. I’m not talking about sunscreen — though if shade isn’t an option, do apply it. I’m referring to the M-word: modesty. It’s not commonly used these days, and I admit I don’t always follow it myself, so no judgment here. You guessed it — modesty. Here’s my take: to me, skin exposure is like a bold lip color — fantastic, but not as great when paired with heavy eyeshadow. It can look a bit… trashy. To keep it classy and beautifully bold, choose one focal point. If your top is low-cut, save the short shorts for another occasion or add a flowy over-shirt. If you’re sporting a jean skirt and cowgirl boots, it might not be the time for a crop-top tank. Gentlemen, we know you have a love-hate relationship with this topic and trust us, so do we. We’re all in this together.
Lastly, and this should have come up sooner as it’s common summer wear for many of us: athletic attire or athleisure wear. Why? Because it’s incredibly comfortable and makes any day feel leisurely. After trying a few Facebook ad brands like Astoria and Halara, I’m a fan! The matching color sets, tennis skirts, and cute, stretchy-material dresses are all great. I did find that I needed to size up with Astoria, so always check the reviews for fit. For Halara, watch out for buy 2, get 1 free deals, and don’t forget to add the third item to your cart — they won’t prompt you to do so. Men, my 6’, 220 lb son swears by Fabletics and Lululemon, but you’ll have to take his word for it since I haven’t tried them myself. And ladies, as cute as sports bra sets are, if you’re running errands, throw on a loose button-up (like the AE Go Big Beach Shirt — a frequent crowd favorite). Stick to the pick-a-piece modesty rule — men can barely keep it together with leggings! Add a ball cap, and boom, you don’t even need to wash your hair to look fantastic.
In summary, summery clothes should provide comfort, confidence, and sun protection. Add the occasional bold pop of color, and with staple neutrals, looking fresh this summer doesn’t have to break the bank. Just head to toe, Texas.
