Los Guapos Mexican Street Food Arrives
In a city awash in great Mex-Mex and Tex-Mex options, Los Guapos Mexican Street Food is a standout. The restaurant located off West 7th Street leans heavily into seafood options, with octopus, shrimp, and fish tacos and dishes along with West Coast imports like birria ramen and the belt-busting Cali burrito.
Headed by Chef Angel Fuentes of Los Guapos Tacos fame, the shotgun-style restaurant has a back patio and a menu primed to satisfy the bustling entertainment district’s brunch crowds. On a recent visit, I ordered the shrimp taco and fish taco. The tacos came packed with cabbage, crema, avocados, and flavorful seafood. The seared shrimp were hefty and tender while the white fish was mild and soft. The two tacos were filling without leaving me feeling overly stuffed.
Up next was the Huarache Guapo. The flattened ovals of warm, tender masa served as the perfect base for a flavorful combination of citrusy pastor, refried beans, and fresh toppings. The fresh cilantro cut through the richness of the creamy queso fresco while the pickled red onions provided a tangy burst of flavor, adding a bright contrast to the dish. Every bite was a well-crafted blend of textures and flavors, making it a must-try on the menu.
Fuentes picked some standouts in the local food service industry to run and manage his new restaurant. The service on my visit was polite and prompt. Considering the quality and presentation of the seafood options here, Los Guapos Mexican Street Food sets a high standard for casual dining in the bustling entertainment district.
Los Guapos Mexican Street Food will be featured on our forthcoming Panther City Social Taco Passport.
