Fragmented Serenity
Room with a View
As part of Fall Gallery Night, William Campbell Contemporary will feature works by John Fraser, who died a few months ago at the age of 72 after an impressive career.
Fraser’s works span drawing, painting, sculpture, and photography. His early career focused on photography, leading to his first solo exhibition in 1980. Fraser’s solo and group exhibitions spanned the globe, and his fellowships and residencies have included the American Academy in Rome and YADDO. As an educator, Fraser has taught at Northern Illinois University and Dominican University. He lectured extensively across North America.
The exhibition features Fraser’s recent works, including the evocative piece Blind Time, which explores the elusive nature of time through an elongated hourglass motif set against a textured panel surface. This artwork, along with others like Measured Formality, demonstrates Fraser’s exploration of geometric composition and understated elegance.
“John Fraser’s contributions to the art world are immeasurable. His ability to transform ordinary materials into extraordinary expressions of thought and emotion was unparalleled,” said Misty Locke, a partner at William Campbell Gallery. “This exhibition not only honors his artistic achievements but also offers a glimpse into his creative journey.”
Describing his own work through his Artist Statement, Fraser said his works are the “result of a constructive process.”
His artistic approach apparently applied to all areas of his life. One online obituary comment describes what it was like receiving a package from the late artist.
“Opening a package from him was like trying to get into Fort Knox,” wrote Courtney Rogers. “He was an excellent packer. He should have had stock in the packing tape industry.”
Fragmented Serenity runs September 7 thru October 19 at William Campbell Contemporary. An opening reception will be held on Fall Gallery Night, Saturday, September 7th, from 12:00-9:00 p.m. at 4935 Byers Avenue, Fort Worth, TX.
